Senior Hardware Engineer
Professional position responsible for acting as a hardware specialist within the team and in front of the customer, influencing the development and direction of hardware systems to ensure compliance with product and customer specifications. Work involves supporting all deployed products (>10 million units, >10 references).
Incumbent works as part of the HW development team to generate comprehensive, innovative, cost effective and reliable HW and system level solutions, documentation and detailed specifications to meet and translate product and customer specifications that conform to the Pace Development Process, within agreed time scales. Incumbent is part of the new concept development team, exploring new development model, new product line, new supplier.
As an example of some of the major responsibilities of the position:
- Generates reliable and cost effective hardware and system level documentation from customer proposals for designs in line with the Pace Documentation Process.
- Develops test specifications and support documentation, as appropriate, for all HW designs in line with the current Pace Development Process.
- With respect to investigation of field issues, understands and reproduces issues, finds root cause, proposes solution to fix it, provides guidelines/recommendation to development to avoid same issue in new products, works closely with test department to improve test coverage.
- Provides maintenance support for existing designs, ensuring prompt rectification of problems.
- Liaises with Test department to ensure optimal test coverage for new product development.
- Participates in and contribute to quality reviews of existing products, tracking proactively field & production data to anticipate field issues.
- By the application of good engineering practice, produces designs with the lowest Annualized Failure Rate commensurate with acceptable costs and guides the hardware team in ensuring the same.
- Ensures that hardware is fully qualified prior to production sign off and in accordance with the Pace Development Process, ensuring all recommendations from 3rd parties are considered.
- Undertakes schematic generation, circuit analysis, validation of hardware and system level designs utilizing the Company specified hardware design tools, in the context of new concept projects.
- Assists the Project Manager to ensure the project plan is both realistic and achievable.
- Contributes to the promotion and improvement of the Pace Product Development Process.
- Acts as a guide to other Engineers.
- Develops specialist technical knowledge and skills that are relevant to the Company’s core business
- Liaises at all levels with Customers, Suppliers and Partners
- Provides detailed analysis on competitors’ products and systems
- May develop automated test tools and rigs for product acceptance tests.
- Ensures proper test, debug and verification of HW designs and hardware platforms prior to release as dictated by functional requirements of the platform.
- Undertakes schematic generation, circuit analysis and validation of HW designs utilizing company-defined hardware tools.
- May manage work outsourced to external certification labs (i.e., Dolby, Macrovision and Customer Specific) for all US Cable products.
- May manage execution of all required external product tests and certifications.
- May maintain external government and customer approval certification archives for all US Cable products.
- May Manage test requirements within Pace’s MKS product requirement system – ensuring consistency of requirements and test methodologies between all cable products.
- Manages execution of all required external product tests and certifications.
- Provides training and assistance to team members as related to A/V and signal integrity tests.
- May evaluate power supply requirements as related to known field conditions.
- Produces breakdowns and task estimates for new projects and systems, assisting the Project Management Team to ensure the project plan is both realistic and achievable.
- Provides realistic estimates of work tasks and HW design duration and delivers to the agreed time-scales.
- Participates in, and contributes to, Design and Project Reviews.
- Promotes the use of process & tools and ensure adherence to Pace Product Development Process
- Provides maintenance support for existing hardware to ensure prompt rectification of problems
- Performs other work, as assigned.
- Should possess detailed knowledge of hardware design, and use of analysis tools and layout techniques for analogue and high-speed digital circuits.
- Should possess detailed knowledge of RF design, audio/video, Power supply design.
- Should have good knowledge of component technologies, specifications, vendors and technology road maps.
- Should be familiar with hardware reliability, EMC and Low Voltage Directive conformance issues and be able to design hardware with improved performance in these areas.
- Must possess the ability to influence system level design to achieve the company defined field failure rates.
- Must be able to analyze/evaluate competitive products and provide recommendations.
- Must possess detailed component knowledge including road maps for product critical technologies related to the "core business".
- Requires the ability to influence system level design to achieve Company-defined field failure rate.
- Must have proven abilities in guiding hardware engineer staff.
- Must possess the ability to prioritize own workload and assist team in prioritizing theirs.
- Must possess first rate interpersonal, presentation and reporting skills.
- Excellent communication skills - oral, written, in person, by phone and e-mail - are essential.
- Must be able to multi-task and innovate.
- Must be pro-active and keen to take on responsibility.
- An ability to influence at all levels is highly beneficial.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL/VISUAL/HEARING ABILITIES
- Ability to perform light lifting in the handling of work materials and equipment.
- Requires visual skills necessary for reviewing a considerable amount of written materials for the accurate maintenance of information and records.
EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE
- Degree in Electronic Engineering or related subject required.
- Must have significant number of years of commercial hardware design and development experience.
- Requires in-depth knowledge of hardware design and analysis tools and layout techniques for analog and high-speed circuits.
- Will have completed several complex and multi-disciplinary projects utilising all aspects of DFR, DFM and EMC techniques.
- Ideally, will have several years of hardware design and development experience.
- Should be experienced in prioritizing workloads.
Equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
