Headend Manager
Professional position responsible for supervising the daily maintenance of a digital & analog video headend to ensure proper system operation for a lab environment. Work involves managing a team responsible for the installation and configuration of all headend equipment and ensuring QOS appropriate for a 24x7 development environment.
As an example of some of the major responsibilities of the position:
- Performs periodic code downloads, software upgrades, perform troubleshooting and diagnostics of headend controllers and equipment and directs team members in the same activities.
- Manages the operation of all headend equipment ensuring a stable 24x7 operation.
- Manages the planning and implementation of new product introductions such that the headend is an accurate representation of field sites.
- Ensures all demonstrations, trade shows, and outside lab testing support needs are addressed.
- Interfaces with other departments to assist in headend requirements.
- Work with vendors and content providers to resolve issues and achieve required timelines.
- Contributes to development of team members and to the coordination of project / functional work.
- Performs other duties as required by supervisor in order to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
- Knowledge of advanced networking skills to assist in the fault resolution of RF, IP and Digital Video networks.
- Possess good computer and software skills including word processing and spreadsheets and the ability to read and interpret network diagrams.
- Detailed knowledge of some programming languages is preferred.
- Requires excellent analytical, customer service, and interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others.
- Must be able to prioritize work tasks and maintain high standards.
- Requires the ability to effectively interact with others to achieve cooperation.
- Must be detail-oriented and possess good organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE
- Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Technology discipline is preferred or equivalent work experience.
- Ideally, experience of commercial cable television or telecommunications technical experience.
- Experience of CATV or IP network experience is required.
- Proven experience managing teams through complex projects.
- Requires understanding of: IP network concepts as they apply to digital video transport; RF video concepts such as IF, VSB, 8-VSB, QPSK and QAM; core video applications such as EAS, IPG, IPPV, DVR, HDTV, CableCards and VOD.
- Requires experience using analog and digital video test equipment.
- Requires experience with pre-wire and post-wire installation, inside wire trouble repair, set-top box activation and audio/ video interface installation.
- Experience working with Unix and Microsoft Operating systems is required.
- Experience with Motorola DAC and/or SA DNCS and major VOD and interactive application devices preferred.
- Successful completion of SCTE Broadband Communication Technician or NCTI Advanced Technician course is preferred.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL/VISUAL/HEARING ABILITIES
- Ability to lift and carry loads of 70lbs. or more in the handling of work materials and equipment.
- Manual dexterity to work on/with hardware components/equipment.
- Requires visual skills necessary for reviewing a considerable amount of written materials for the accurate maintenance of information and records.
Equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
