ANGA Cable 2006, Cologne, Germany, 30 May 2006: Pace Micro Technology plc (pic.l), the leading dedicated innovator of technology solutions for the payTV industry, and Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe (FME) a leading silicon vendor, have joined together to develop a combined Wimax/set-top box solution for operators, which will be shown for the first time at the ANGA Cable show.
By bringing together this cutting-edge wireless broadband technology with the latest developments in digital TV, Pace and FME hope to demonstrate to payTV operators and telcos the possibilities that a mobile broadband solution can offer for the distribution of digital services.
The Pace/Fujitsu Wimax collaboration consists of an 802.16d fixed Wimax platform, which is connected to the Pace Multi-Dweller network, thereby providing a wireless broadband element to Pace's latest networking technology.
According to recent research* Wimax is the leading contender for mobile services amongst wireless solutions, with a predicted market revenue of $3.3 billion by 2010.
Darren Fawcett, Chief Technologist - Wireless Systems at Pace commented: "Wimax is still an emerging technology, but it promises to revolutionise the broadband market and open up a whole range of opportunities for payTV operators and telcos.
"It is the flexibility inherent in the Wimax system - due to its agility in frequency of operation, adaptive modulation, and advanced link coding, combining to reduce operator expenditure costs, improved throughput and range - that puts it forward as a, potentially, very powerful system for the future. As such Pace is keen to investigate this technology and determine how it may shape the future of digital content distribution."
Mark Ellins, Director of the Communications Business Unit at FME commented: "Integrating Wimax into a digital content distribution system has provided us with crucial insights into how information and content could be accessed in the future. By collaborating with Pace on this project we are able to combine our respective areas of expertise to develop an emerging technology that could be deployed in the real world and shape the future for broadband and digital TV services."
